Portuguese heritage : Alcobaça’s chintz

CON005-6Portugal is a country of great wealths . We have sun, beach, mountain, sea and an incalculable cultural and intangible heritage .

Alcobaça’s Chintz (known as Chitas de Alcobaça) is a good example. Originating in India , this fabric was brought to Portugal where , since the XVI century , Gil Vicente made reference to these fabrics in “A Farsa dos Almocreves”.

According to Maria Augusta Trindado, author of ” De Gil Vicente às Colchas de Chita de Alcobaça ” Alcobaça held in the XVIII century one of the most important textile industries of the country, and probably the denomination of Alcobaça’s Chintz came from there. It stands out from other cotton fabrics by colorful patterns , wide or thin stripes and floral motifs , animals or cornucopias .

Over the centuries , this fabric has not been lost in time. It was rediscovered up in new forms of application and use . Yesterday by artisans, today by designers. Allways the same fabric.
